Artificial intelligence and education
The Standing Scientific Commission of the KMK (SWK) publishes an impulse paper on the potential of large AI language models for education. Prof. Dr. Kai Maaz, member of the SWK, and Prof. Dr. Hendrik Drachsler, co-author of the paper, explain the topic in a podcast of the DIPF series “Sitzenbleiben”.

Frankfurt Science Network
16 scientific institutions from the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region join their forces to form the Frankfurt Alliance. In the light of major current challenges, the network aims to strengthen its collaboration. In September 2024, the Alliance will present itself at a science festival in Frankfurt.

Extended Open Science offerings
The DFG is funding the Specialized Information Service Education for a further three years. The service, which is part of the Education Research Portal, will contribute to the further opening of its scientific fields in the sense of Open Science - for example by expanding a subject-specific knowledge graph.

New research professorship appointed
PD Dr. Katharina Vogel has been appointed to the research professorship for “Historical Educational Research with a Focus on Digital Humanities” at the DIPF and Humboldt University Berlin. Her aim is to use digital approaches to gain new knowledge about the history of education and at the same time to reflect on it critically.

Theory, method and practice transfer
As part of the BMBF joint project “PROM3THEUS”, the first interdisciplinary conference for empirical educational researchers in the early career phase is being organized at the DIPF. It is about theory development. Further conferences on the selection of methods and practical links will follow in 2025 and 2026.

Cohort in junior research program starts
Start for a new cohort of the “College for Interdisciplinary Educational Research” (CIDER): The junior researcher program, funded by the Leibniz Education Research Network (LERN) and the Jacobs Foundation and supported by ten institutes, primarily supports postdocs. It is coordinated at the DIPF.

New national report on education
A group of academic authors coordinated by the DIPF publishes the new national report on education. The analysis shows an education system that is working at the limit and is under great pressure to adapt. The report's focus chapter focuses on vocational education and training.

Commitment to diversity honored
The institute is awarded the “berufundfamilie + vielfalt” certificate. It proves that the potential of diversity is identified at the DIPF and that diversity management is systematically and sustainably developed. The institute has already been certified several times as a family-friendly employer.

Online knowledge on GDR education myths
The knowledge platform “Educational myths in the long history of the GDR” goes online. With a variety of access options, it presents the results of the historical research network “MythErz”, in which the BBF of the DIPF, the Humboldt University Berlin and the Universities of Hildesheim and Rostock are cooperating.

Research association for the Startchancen program
A research association led by the DIPF has been selected to provide scientific support and expertise for the Startchancen program. The program, funded by the federal and state governments with 20 billion euros over 10 years, aims to decouple educational success more strongly from social background.

“eduresearch.social” on Mastodon
Social media exchange: The Mastodon instance “eduresearch.social” is now available to all persons and institutions involved in educational research, educational science and subject didactics as a data secure alternative to the major social media platforms. It is operated and moderated at the DIPF.

Position paper on the shortage of skilled workers
Experts from the Leibniz Education Research Network (LERN), which is coordinated by the DIPF, publish a position paper with suggestions on how to tackle the shortage of skilled workers in education. They also discuss this with administrators and politicians at the annual Education Policy Forum.

Recommendations for strong schools
The research assocication led by the DIPF as part of the federal and state initiative “Schule macht stark” (SchuMaS) publishes its first scientific publication. Among other things, it contains recommendations for schools and administrations. The SchuMaS program supports schools in socially disadvantaged areas.

Anchoring effective language education
The final publication of the federal-state initiative “BiSS-Transfer” is available. The aim was to further develop effective language support tools, disseminate the material and anchor in in school and lesson development in the long term. The DIPF is part of the consortium responsible for overall coordination.
